Michael Campbell, Computer Science

Principal Engineering Specialist, Aerospace Corporation 

 

 

Michael Campbell (Class of 1980) is a Principal Engineering Specialist at The Aerospace Corporation, a Federally Funded Research & Development Center headquartered in El Segundo, California. The organization provides a wide range of technical support to many U.S. government space organizations such as the Air Force, the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), NASA, and NOAA.

 

Mike is a true UC engineer, earning his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics and computer science all from UC campuses. He maintains strong ties with both of his alma maters by chairing a UC Department of Computer Science & Engineering’s External Advisory Board and participating in mentoring programs for undergraduates. He also teaches computer science part time, giving back to the next generation of engineers.

 

Mike has served in several senior leadership roles during his 35-year career in the defense industry, such as supporting the NRO’s Chief Architect for Future Ground Architecture and serving as the Chief Software Engineer for the GPS Satellite Program. He also previously led a large team at Aerospace performing research and development for applications of information technology to space systems and worked for Hughes Aircraft Company and Hughes Research Laboratories.

 

Mike’s expertise has significantly contributed to advancements in system/software engineering, software mission assurance, satellite ground system engineering, computer science theory, and optimization via genetic algorithms. He is the author of more than 20 published papers and one issued U.S. patent. He met his wife on a UC campus and they have two adult children.
